Well here I was, all proud to have posted to this blog so often last week, and this week it's been like the sink full of dishes that I just can't quite summon the courage to tackle... But it's been a crazy one! I finally got the Corvette painting shipped, and thanks to the willingness to share of the gentleman who commissioned it, it ended up on the Corvette Society's Facebook page! (Click here if you don't believe me!)
So anyway, that's been that.
Since I finished that painting, I've been experimenting with a few little things in between working on a new painting for my sister. Now, I don't usually venture far away from my usual mediums of paint, pencil, and ink, and when I do, it's usually to try colored pencil or something insanely outrageous. However, I have recently been messing around with some new stuff, just to see what I can come up with.

So, what is this supposed to be, you might ask. Well, let me first say that this was my first attempt at messing with this, so it is much more of an experiment in using these materials than it is any evidence of effort in terms of making a good image. I was going to put together a more interesting and well thought-out something-or-other, but this is what I have to work with right now. Anyway! This is watercolor paper, gouache, watercolor, sharpie, masking tape, and (wait for it...) emptied out tea bags. As I make more and more tea every day (and more and more and more and more and more and more... it's a problem), I can't help but lament the amount of material I'm throwing away, and especially considering the interesting stains that can form on the paper after the tea has been brewed, I couldn't help but have a go at using them to make some art of some sort.
I'm definitely going to have to try using this technique more often, in some form or another. The filter paper wasn't nearly as translucent as I thought it would be, so you can't see much of the layer on the watercolor paper, but the way the colors bled around was quite interesting.
So more pictures, for kicks and gigs:
SO MUCH TEXTURE. It's something I need to work on adding to my usual artwork, so it's good to get to play with the extreme.
There's not much more to say about the matter except to just comment on how important it is not avoid getting too wrapped up in the kind of art that you "usually" stick to. Trying new things will ALWAYS provide useful information and experience. Even if you don't find a technique that you plan on using frequently, you'll find something you can appreciate, something you're way better at than you thought, and even things that you're terrible at and should avoid like the plague. For me, this was a fun experiment. It's fabulous to be able to just mess around with some materials and not worrying about ruining a project I have big plans for. I like the technique, I like the materials, and I'm excited to tool around with it some more. I hope you'll try new things, learn new things, and just relax a bit.
Thanks!
Sarah
